Theatre (or theater, see spelling differences) is a branch of the performing arts. While any performance may be considered theatre, as a performing art, it focuses almost exclusively on live performers creating a self contained drama. A performance qualifies as dramatic by creating a representational illusion. By this broad definition, theatre had existed since the dawn of man, as a result of the human tendency for storytelling. Since its inception, theatre has come to take on many forms, utilizing speech, gesture, music, dance, and spectacle, combining the other performing arts, often as well as the visual arts, into a single artistic form.

The word derives from the Ancient Greek theatron (θέατρον) meaning "the seeing place."

What broadway / musical theater songs are good for auditions?
Q. I have an audition coming up for a theater group, and any appropriate musical theater or broadway song idea is good! :] I am an alto, but have a wide range. Lists of songs and websites are helpful, thanks!

A. If you're really good and want to show off: Defying Gravity from Wicked If you want something more low-key, I'm going to go with a more original RENT suggestion: One Song Glory. Unless you can belt and sing high, in which case Out Tonight might be a better option. If you want something older and a total classic: Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific, or Hopelessly Devoted To You from Grease. If you want something light and fun: So Much Better from Legally Blonde, or Popular from Wicked. If you want to come off as the classic actress, just go with Seasons of Love from RENT. Everyone worships that song. I hope I helped:) xoRog

How can I get my community theater more publicity?
Q. I've been actively helping out there for the past four years with tech, acting, set design, waitressing there, etc. I want to become a board member, and show that I have what it takes. I need to show that not only can I do shows but I can benefit the theater with money and possible get them more publicity. And ideas?

A. I would first of all get a good advertisement for the theater's shows and seasons, make sure you have a website, of course posters, and maybe if you can, ask a local news station about a television commercial. If this isn't enough, I know my theater company has regular live shows around the community for free, to act as a teaser to get more publicity and people to come to our shows. Ask about performing at local fairs, festivals, anywhere!

Theatre (Greek "theatron"), enjoys the distinction of two spellings: in British English, "theatre" and in American English, "theater". There is no technical distinction between the meanings of the two spellings, however most theatre artists prefer the English spelling because it creates a historical nod to the ancient Greek term theatron. Some also use the American spelling to designate a theatre building and the English term to reference the art itself, as in the "art of theatre." Theatre is that branch of the performing arts concerned with the creation of stories or narratives for (or with) an audience using combinations of acting, speech, gesture, music, dance, object manipulation, sound and spectacle — indeed, any one or more elements of the other performing arts. In addition to standard narrative dialogue style, theatre takes such forms as opera, musicals, ballet, mime, kabuki, classical Indian dance, Chinese opera, mummers' plays, and pantomime.
